Graduate Student Assistantships and Fees

Research assistantships are available to many students. The College of Science has received over $1 million in research grants in recent years. Contact faculty members directly to enquire about research assistantship opportunities.

Graduate teaching assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Current awards (2006-2007) are $14,399 per academic year for a full-time TA (20 hours per week) and $7,199 for a 50% TA (10 hours per week).

A limited number of out-of-state tuition waivers are available for incoming students. Full-time assistantships automatically include full out-of-state tuition waivers whereas part-time assistantships automatically include a 50% out-of-state tuition waiver. A full or partial out-of-state tution waiver can be applied for using the online out-of-state tuition waiver application form.

Scholarships and Grants

The College of Science Graduate Scholarships include the Albert Hall Featherstone Scholarship, which is based on financial need, scholastic ability and promise of professional achievement; the Donald Crabtree Scholarships, awarded to students working on lithic techniques, the James Fitzgerald Scholarship for a student studying volcanic rocks; the JIRP Scholarship for thesis research in the Juneau Icefield, and the Carl Savage Scholarship for excellence in a geology masters thesis on an Idaho subject. Some students have been successful in competing for national scholarships such as those awarded by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Geological Society of America.

Student Fees

The fees paid by graduate students depend on the residency status of the student and on the number of credit hours registered.

Students with Teaching or Research Assistantships pay in-state fees.

Full-time in-state graduate students pay: $2,370 per semester.
Full-time out-of-state graduate students pay: $7,170 per semester (unless awarded an out-of-state tuition waiver, which is invariably the case).

Part-time (7 credits or less) in-state graduate students pay $227 per credit.
Part-time (7 credits or less) out-of-state graduate students pay $140 per credit (paid in addition to resident fees).

Fees are listed for the 2006-2007 academic year. All fees are subject to change. Typical annual fee increases are in the 8-10% range.

Finances

Graduate students may be eligible for financial assistance. Scholarships, College Work Study, National Direct Student Loans and Guaranteed Student Loans are all sources of assistance administered by the Financial Aid office. All paperwork including a completed University of Idaho Financial Aid application and the College Scholarship Financial Aid Form (FAF) must be received by early March for consideration for the fall semester. Questions concerning eligibility and requests for forms should be sent to:
