Graduate Admission Requirements and Procedures
The minimum standards for admission to the University of Idaho graduate school are:
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
- A cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher (or a GPA of 3.0 over the last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits).
- Acceptability to the department.
On occasion, a student who does not meet these standards may be accepted provisionally.
The Geological Sciences Department reviews the individual applications in early February (for Fall semester applications), using the following criteria:
- Performance in previous course work.
- Letters of recommendation.
- Scores on the GRE general exam.
- Work experience, research experience, and statements of interest.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Please ensure that you complete each of the following requirements when submitting your application. All materials MUST be received by the application deadline. Use this list as a checklist to ensure that your application package to the university will be complete. Incomplete applications may be rejected by the graduate admissions office or by the department of geological sciences.
| 1. |
Complete an official Application for Admission to College of Graduate Studies form which can be submitted online to the graduate admissions office. This serves as your official application to the University of Idaho. Payment of the Application Fee is required before the application can be considered. |
2. |
Send Three Letters of Recommendation directly to the Graduate Admissions Office (NOT to the Department of Geological Sciences) at the following address:
University of Idaho
Graduate Admissions Office
PO Box 443019
Moscow, ID 83844-3019 |
3. |
Send Official Transcripts from each university attended to the graduate admissions office at the above address. |
4. |
Send official results of your Graduate Record Examination (GRE Scores) to the graduate admissions office at the above address. Again, do NOT send these materials to the department. The two general GRE test scores are required (verbal + quantitative). |
5. |
Supply the graduate admissions office with a 1-2 page Statement of Career Objectives. |
6. |
Supply the graduate admissions office with a 1-2 page Curriculum Vitae or Resume. |
7. |
Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for department grants and scholarships. [FAFSA is not mandatory to be considered for TA or RA funding, but we strongly encourage you to apply.] |
8. |
If you are an international applicant from a non-English speaking country, submit Results of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). A minimum score of 525 on the paper test or 193 on the computer test or 70 on the internet test is required for admission to the university. Note that a list of English-speaking countries whose residents are not required to submit TOEFL results is shown at this website address: http://www.students.uidaho.edu/default.aspx?pid=15586. |
9. |
Submit the online Departmental Application Form. Note that this form must be submitted in addition to the official application to the college of graduate studies. It serves as your application to the department of geological sciences. |
Please note that ALL of these items MUST be received in the graduate admissions office by the application deadline, including the letters of recommendation, otherwise you run the risk of not being considered for an assistantship due to an incomplete application. If you decide to print out any application form and submit it by mail, please send it to the graduate admissions office, not the geology department. You will be informed by the Graduate Admissions Office when your application is complete, or you can contact them directly at gadms@uidaho.edu to enquire about your application materials status.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact faculty members directly to find out more information about specific research programs and research funding opportunities in the department.
